Applied Rhetoric, Applied to Real Life

There's a layer beneath the words. We can unlock it, and we can decode it. And then things open up.

Hi, I'm Jennie Young.

I’m a professor of writing and rhetoric at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, specializing in applied rhetoric, humor, feminism, education, and dating dynamics. I hold a Ph.D. in rhetoric and discourse studies from Case Western Reserve University and a satire writing certificate from Second City Chicago. My work has been published in McSweeney’s, Ms. Magazine, HuffPost, and others and covered by major media outlets such as The New York Times and Newsweek.

Hidden just beneath the words we read, hear, and speak, there is another layer of meaning that is richer, more consequential, and more revealing than what you see on the surface. Using tricks and tactics from applied rhetoric, you can unlock this layer, de-code its offerings, and approach people and life with a deeper and more powerful level of understanding and agency. I can teach you how.

Tailored to your business, organization, or institution.

I will work with you and your organization to identify how you might benefit from the creative and analytical power of applied rhetoric. Once that’s determined, we’ll decide the most effective format. This could take the form of one brief virtual presentation, a keynote speech, in-person workshop/conference, or an ongoing program of consultation. We’ll figure it out together.
